What is Kernza®? And other common questions about perennial grains.
What are the benefits of Kernza® perennial grain?
Because it is a perennial, Kernza® regrows each year without needing to be tilled and replanted. This allows the roots to grow nearly 15 feet — 6x deeper than regular wheat. Those roots help to prevent erosion, filter water, sequester carbon, and prevent nitrogen runoff. As a perennial, it also requires fewer equipment passes over the field by farmers each year.
What is Kernza®?
It is the first perennial grain crop. It’s a cousin of annual wheat and a long-time forage grass. Intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium) produces Kernza® perennial grain. The name “Kernza” comes from the words “Konza” (the Konza Prairie) and “kernel”. It was domesticated by The Land Institute in Salina, Kansas.
